Abstract

With regard to critical studies on literary translation, the present essay focuses on the strategies of adaptation and circulation of Edgar Allan Poe’s tales within the Italian literary field between the 1880s and the 1930s. Four translations issued by the Milan-based printing house Sonzogno from 1883 to 1934 (Racconti straordinari, Nuovi racconti straordinari, Racconti grotteschi e Nuovi racconti strani) will be considered as case studies representative of the consolidation of Poe’s status as a popular writer for Italian readers between the two centuries.
