---

This essay, derived from the degree thesis “Il femminile nell’opera di Tolstoj”, underlines the duplicity the great russian novelist shows in his literary work in matter of woman figure, analyzing it and emphasizing the constant tension that characterize his relationship with the feminine. Trying to provide an explanation for the author’s complex and ambivalent perception of the woman, this essay goes back over all his work – a work tightly connected to biographical experience – and shows how the author’s able of empathy become more profound in relation to female characters.

The entire Tolstoj’s literary work is ruled by the spiritual and aery memory of his ever known mother and carries traces of a passionate and conflicting soul forced to choose between heaven and earth: “When I have one foot in the grave, I will tell the whole truth about women. I shall tell it, jump into my coffin, pull the lid over me”, said Tolstoj, but is legit to think that he hadn’t ever pronounced a conclusive word about women. Maybe, unconsciously pictured in War and Peace epilogue, the only portrait which resembles to the searched ideal is Nataša’s, which is bind to the memory of the maternal figure.
ER -
